The native soils are clayey and not suitable for bedding or pipe zone material. Sandy material is available from a nearby dry river bed that is suitable for the pipe bedding and the pipe zone. The laboratory maximum dry unit weight of the alluvial sand is 109 pcf with an optimum water content of 10.2%. The in-place total unit weight and water content of the sand are 98 pcf and 5%, respectively. 1. How many gallons of water will be needed to moisture condition the soil to near optimum water content? 2. How much would the elevation of the river bed be lowered (in feet) if the borrow area was approximately 75 feet by 300 feet? 3. What type of compaction equipment would you recommend to compact the pipe zone? Explain your reasoning for selection of the compaction equipment. 4. Which area of the pipe zone would you expect will be the most difficult to compact? Indicate the specific area of the pipe zone you feel will be most difficult to compact on the detail. Explain your reasoning for selecting the area you indicated on the drawing.
