A 70-ft long drilled shaft is to be built in the soil shown in the Figure. Toe of the shaft rests on the stiff clay layer. The shaft will be 5 ft in diameter. Ignore the weight of the shaft and assume the factor of safety is 2: a) Estimate the allowable vertical load (Pallow) that can be placed on the top of the shaft. State your methodology and show your calculations clearly.
