Problem I A layer of clayey soil which is 8 m thick is situated on an impermeable bedrock and carries an overburden of permeable sand. A large structure built in the sand causes the pressure on every horizontal section of the clay to increase to the same value. In a standard laboratory oedometer experiment, the void ratio of a sample of the clay (which is 20 mm thick) decreased from 0.775 to 0.750 under a corresponding increase in pressure. In this experiment, consolidation was 70% complete after 45 minutes. Calculate the settlement of the structure and the time elapsing before 80% of this total settlement amount has taken place.
