(a) A sandy soil is subjected to a consolidated-drained triaxial shear test. The initial cell pressure was 9,400 psf, and the deviator stress at failure was 162 psi. Convert all stresses to Sl units i) Determine initial and final principal stresses. ii) Calculate the effective and total friction angles for this soil. ii) Construct the Mohr-Coulumb envelope, and plot the Mohr diagram. (b) A direct shear test was performed on the same sandy soil. The normal stress was 390 kPa, and failure was observed when shear stress was 260 kPa. Develop the Mohr-Coulomb envelope and, using the trigonometric relationships, calculate the principal effective stresses.
