Question (1): (10 marks) a. Classify the soil types according to the shear strength. b. Figure (1) shows a square 3m x 3m rigid Isolated footing subjected to 2500 kN constrated load. This footing is implemented on a multi-layered soil consists of three soil layers, as shown. Primary consolidation is assumed to be completed at 90%, and the project design life is estimated as 50 Years. If the the Poisson's ratio of the clay is 0.5, and the ceoffient of secondary consolidation is determined as C.=0.015, its required to: i. Determine the immediate settlement of the clay soil layer. ii. Determine the time required for 90% primary consolidation. Also, find the final primary consolidation settlment at this stage due to Primary consolidation only). iii. Determine the secondary consolidation settlement (Creep) that will happen after the expected time for the primary consolidation (Consider the value you obtained in ii) and till 50 years. iv. Obtain the total settlement of the clay layer duo to the three consolidation stages, and draw a relation between the consolidation settlement(Y-Axis) and time for each stage (X-axis). 2500 KN 2.0 m Fill Graniluar soil layer y = 19 kN/m G.W.T 3*3 m 8.0 m Meduim to Soft CLAY Layer Y... = 16 kN/m m = 4.810*m/KN k = 7.0. 10 cm/sec Extended Dense sand Soil layer ysat - 22 kN/m Out of: 10 Marks
