Design Problem You are the Lead Design Engineer and your company requires you to determine the most efficient power plant that produces 500 MW considering two different scenarios in order to select the most appropriate one. Scenario I Design a steam power plant that works as a Regenerative Rankine cycle with 1 open feedwater heater by selecting the extraction pressure to optimize cycle efficiency. The available steam conditions at the inlet of the turbine are 10 MPa and 500 °C (plus the last two digits of your ID number) and the condenser pressure is 10 kPa. The isentropic efficiency of the turbine is 0.89 while it is 0.8 for the pump. Scenario II Design a gas turbine power plant that works as an air-standard Brayton cycle by selecting the optimal pressure ratio to maximize cycle efficiency. Air enters the compressor at 27°C, 95 kPa while the turbine inlet temperature is 1400 K (plus the last two digits of your ID number). The isentropic efficiency of the compressor is 0.84 while it is 0.89 for the gas turbine. In each scenario, assume no pressure drop in the heat exchangers. A T-s diagram for the cycle should be provided along with a table showing the pressure, temperature, enthalpy, entropy and quality (where applicable) of all the states at the optimized point. Mention the required flow rate of the working fluid, rate of heat input, rate of heat rejected as well as cycle efficiency at the design point. Deliverables should be submitted on or before May 5th, 2022. You are to provide the software files used (e.g. Matlab or EES) with its coding so that it can be checked. Secondly, a report in MS Word is to be submitted. Make a single zip or rar file containing both of them and upload in blackboard where the link is provided using the file naming system of TProj_201023456 using your ID number.
