= Q2. (a) Show that when the material of Figure Q2(a) is subjected to uniaxial tension force P without lateral restraint, the volumetric strain is given by: AV = e(1-2v) V. Where: AV is the change of volume due to axial stress, V. is the original volume before the stress is applied, e is the longitudinal strain, and v is Poisson's ratio for the material. [7 marks] Figure Q2a (a) Figure Q2(b) shows two steel bars each of 2.0 m length and 30 mm in diameter supporting a temporary road sign weighting 5000 kg. Take: E = 205 kN/mm², Poisson's ratio v = 0.3 and g = 9.81 m/s2 [6 marks] [5 marks] (0) Calculate the shortening per bar. (ii) Calculate the change in lateral dimension per bar.
