ME3340 Engineering Materials (Spring 2022) Problem 3 (33 points) Consider a thin-walled spheical tank with a wall thickness of 4 mm and a diameter of 240 mm. The design criterion against plastic yielding due to tension uses a factor of safety value 1.25 while the leak-before-break design criterion uses a factor of safety value 4. If a material with 345 MPa yield strength and 44 MPavm fracture toughness is selected for the spherical tank, please find the maximum allowable pressure in MPa of the fluid inside the spherical tank. Assume that the dimensionless factor Y = 1 for fracture analysis. Note: the tension stress in the thin- walled spherical shell is given as pr/(2t). poum dum 2. 1am (25)
