Assume that you are a project engineer in a minerals refining plant. On this particular day, your line manager surprises you on arrival at work and presents you with the attached sketch (Figure 1. below) of a proposed design for a particulate feed chute for delivery of hot materials into a rotating kiln – service conditions as indicated. On this design, your manager has to make a presentation to senior directors later in the day and has requested that you suggest a number of options on materials for the fabrication of the chute and fixtures. Therefore: (i) Outline the parameters/criteria that you need to consider for the materials selection. (ii) Using the details determined in (i), suggest 3 (three) possible material choices for the chute and fixtures. List the advantages and disadvantages of each choice and rank them in order of preference.
