Water flows at 18 m/s into the opening of a rectangular open channel shown in the sketch below. The water first encounters a contraction followed by a bump that is Az = 0.3 m high. The slope of the channel is constant and small. Energy losses through the contraction and over the bump are small and may be neglected. Plan View 9m бm Water Level Side Elevation 2m AZ 1 2 3 4 N 5 1 For a steady flow in which the water depth at section 1 is measured to be 2 m: i) Calculate the water depth downstream of the contraction (point 2), immediately upstream of the bump (point 3), at the bump (point 4) and immediately down stream of the bump (point 5). Show the flow graphically by locating the points (1-5) on a curve of specific energy. ii) If the flow upstream of the point 1 is fully developed uniform flow, calculate the slope of the channel (the channel walls are concrete with n = 0.013). iii) What is the minimum height of the bump at point 4 which will produce a control.
