= = = Problem 1: Consider the zero current switching resonant switch circuit discussed in class with input voltage Vin 12V, output voltage Vout 7V, output load current Iout = 2A, switching frequency fsw = 1MHz, resonant inductor L, = 0.25uH, and resonant capacitor C, = 25nF. Complete the following (50 points]: a) Draw the resonant inductor current, resonant capacitor voltage and the diode voltage waveforms on the same time-axis. [15 points). Label the duration of the various sub- intervals on the x-axis. [8 points). Note: Suitable approximations in the calculations will be accepted. b) Consider the following cases when the load current Iout varies to i) 2.5A, ii) 1.5A and, iii) 4A. Could the transistor switch still be switched under ZCS? If yes, assume that the switch is switched under ZCS by tuning the switching signal to minimize switching losses. How would that effect the circuit operation? If not, how would that effect the circuit operation? Please answer for each of the three cases separately. [16 points). = c) Compare this circuit's operation with a simple buck converter with Vin = 12V, output voltage Vout 7V, output load current Iout = 2A, switching frequency fsw 20kHz. Note that the switching frequency is reduced to limit switching losses without ZCS operation. [6 points). Which converter would you prefer to work with? Why? [5 points) Note: Switching frequency is kept constant in Problem 1b.
