Question 3 a) A computer network has been configured as shown in Figure 2. The IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway of PC_1, PC_2, PC_3, PC_4 and the IP address of each interface of the four routers are given as shown in the figure. Assume the forwarding table of each router has been corrected configured. PC_2 PC_2 IP:10.10.10.3 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.240 Default gateway: 192.168.106 PC_4 IP: 10.10.16.243 Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Default gateway:10.10.16.2 10.10.16.2 192.168.10.6 R2 192.168.10.2 192.168.109 R4 192.168.10.22 192.10 10.10 192.168.10.1 R3 R1 192.168.10.5 192.168.10.21 192.168.10.5 172.16 302 172.16.40.13 PC1 PC3 IP: 172.16.30.182 Subnet mask:255.255.255.0 Default gateway: 172.16.30-2 IP: 172.16.40.256 Subnet mask:255.255.255.0 Default gateway: 172.16.40.13 PC_1 Figure 2 i) Can PC_1 communicate successfully with PC_3? Explain your answer. ii) Can PC_2 communicate successfully with PC_4? Explain your answer. What is the network address of the subnet which PC_4 is connected to? What is the maximum number of hosts that can be supported in this subnet? iv) Assume a new device, PC_x is joining the network and would like to obtain an IPv4 address automatically. Explain which protocol can facilitate this and the steps of the information exchange between PC_x and the server that runs this protocol.

b) This question relates to a router with multiple incoming ports and one outgoing port. i) If the link rate of the outgoing port is 500 packets per second, what is the transmission delay experienced by a packet? ii) Assume the first four digits of your student ID denote the packet size in bytes. For example, if your student ID is 210541326, the packet size would be 2105 bytes. What is the link rate of the outgoing port in Mbps based on the packet size dictated by your student ID? iii) Assume the packet size were made bigger than in ii), would the link rate of the outgoing port go up, down or stay the same? Explain your answer. iv) Will the propagation delay experienced on a network link vary based on the packet size? Explain your answer. v) If the buffer at the outgoing port is currently full, what is the consequence of this for incoming packets?
