3. (a) Explain why each phase of overhead transmission lines is typically carried on a bundle of individual conductors and phase conductors are often transposed. (6 marks) (b) The following are the line data of a 100km, 50Hz, three-phase overhead transmission line with phases placed horizontally. Line voltage Conductors per phase Flat phase spacing 400 kV 2 13.5 m Conductor diameter Bundle/conductor spacing 6 cm 42 cm i) Determine the inductance and capacitance per phase per km of the transmission line, and hence the ABCD parameters of the transmission line. (11 marks) ii) If the bundled conductors of each phase are replaced with a single conductor with the same total cross-sectional area, what would be the effects of this on the inductance and capacitance of the transmission line? Explain without calculations. (3 marks)
