Packets are transmitted over a network as illustrated in Table 2. The packet payload contains JPEG2000 data indicated by the symbol number and parity symbols denoted by X. One property of JPEG2000 is that a symbol can be decoded only if all previous symbols have been decoded. Channel coding is applied columnwise. Channel coding is such that if k parity symbols are used in a column, the whole column can be recovered if up to k symbols are lost. We assume that the packet header gives the packet number and the number of parity symbols in the packet. a) Suppose that packets 1, 2, 5, and 6 are lost. Determine which JPEG2000 symbols can be decoded by the receiver.

What is the probability that at least the first six JPEG2000 symbols can be decoded by the receiver? c) We assume that packets are lost independently with a packet loss rate of p. Find an expression for the average number of JPEG2000 symbols that can be decoded by the receiver.
