Question 3 - Induction and Synchronous Motors a) Explain the differences between synchronous motors and induction motors. By describing the construction and operation of each motor, and how power is distributed to the rotor. The advantages and disadvantages of the synchronous and induction motors. (7 marks) b) What are the benefits and disadvantages of using a synchronous induction motor, and for what applications is it suitable? Losses of a synchronous motor may be calculated from its design data. How could the individual and total losses be ascertained by physical measurement? (6 marks) c) Draw the flow diagram of power distribution in an induction motor. You must show the input power to the stator winding and the losses to be expected in each part and culminating in useful mechanical power obtained from the motor shaft. (3 marks) d) Show the development of the equivalent circuit of a single-phase of a three-phase induction motor by using 4 stages of representation of the stator and rotor winding circuit, that end in an approximate equivalent circuit and equations.
