Abstract: The spring constant of a spring was determined by measuring variations in the oscillation period as the load mass of an oscillating mass on the spring is varied. The value of the spring constant was found to be k=9.98+0.21 N/m. This matches the expectation value for a Pasco lab spring of 10.00+0.20 N/m. Theory: The stiffness of a spring can be determined by measuring the period of oscillation of a suspended mass. For a mass suspended on a spring, it can be shown that the period of oscillation (T in sec) depends upon the suspended mass (m in kg) and the spring constant (k in N/m) according to the following relationship (Knight, R. 2008): (1.) T = 271/ Equation (1) can be solved for the peroid in terms of mass to yield the following relationship: TP = 412 m (2) Thus, a plot of T² as a function of m should yield a linear relationship with a slope, s in m/N, related to spring constant by the following relationship: (3.) When a data set consisting of values of T associated with different values of mis plotted as T2 vs. m, the slope can be determined using a linear regression. The value of the spring constant is expected to be 10 N/m as stated by the manufacturer. In addition to the slope, the intercept of our graph is expected to be zero.
