7. Poor Freda! The day before yesterday Freda was 17. Next year she will be 20. How can this be so? (hint: no tricks here. It could happen to anyone whose birthday is the same as Freda's!) (from Lateral Thinking Puzzlers by Paul Sloane, p. 16) The Football Match For most of us in the USA, soccer is what the rest of the world calls football. This puzzle is about the latter, not like the Super Bowl. The hints below are most helpful, so no need to repeat them! 13. For the sports minded enthusiast (but you don't need to know the game to play!) Teams A, B, C, D, and E are all to play each other once in a soccer tournament. The following table gives some information about the teams' standings after most of the games have been played. Find who played whom and the score of each match. In other words, fill in the table completely! Team Played Won Lost Tied For Against Points A 4 8 1 5 B 3 7 2 с 3 0 5 3 D 2 1 E 2 5 O MITT Hints: "For" refers to the number of goals a team scored against opponents. "Against" refers to the number of goals scored against the team by opponents. "Points" refers to the number of points in the standings a team has. For each win a team receives 2 points; for a tie, each team in the tie receives 1 point; for each loss, a team receives 0 points. One helpful way to think of the "points" is that there are 2 points to be distributed for every game. The winner takes 2, the loser takes 0, and if there is a tie, each team gets 1 apiece. Good hint?
