Critical Thinking 14: Functions In this activity we will create a set of function cards for each of the types covered in class. An example of a completed function card for quadratic functions is shown below Quadratic f(x) = ax? + bx + c Quadratic f(x) = ax? + bx + c = SIMPLEST FORM y = r2 f(x) = 2x + 12x +14 -10 (-3,-4) DOMAIN All real numbers RANGE Given that (h, k) is the vertex: If a > 0, then the range is all real numbers greater than k. If a < 0, then the range is all real numbers less thank If a = 0, it is not a quadratic function. CHARACTERISTIC 1 The vertex (h, k) is on the line of symmetry CHARACTERISTIC 2 The line of symmetry is x = h APPEARANCE Looks like U if a > 0 or n if a < 0 INTERESTING FEATURES y-k = a(x - h) is another symbolic representation of the function. REAL-WORLD APPLICATION The rate at which a ball falls in Earth's gravitational field is a quadratic function of time. f(x) = -x + 6x - 7 (3, 2) - 10 As a class we will complete the others. If you complete this assignment online then just complete one other function card. A blank function card template is shown on the next page. Possible function types include: Linear, Polynomial, Rational, Radical, Absolute Value, Exponential, and Logarithmic.

f(x) f(x) SIMPLEST FORM DOMAIN RANGE CHARACTERISTIC 1 CHARACTERISTIC 2 APPEARANCE INTERESTING FEATURES REAL-WORLD APPLICATION
