PROBLEM 1. A C15x50 A36 steel (Fy=36 ksi, Fu=58ksi) is to be
used as a tension member. The section was end-bolted in a manner as
shown below using 7/8” (nominal) standard-punched bolts. Determine
all nominal capacities of the steel section considering all modes
of failures and determine the ultimate design strength using LRFD.
Assume that the tensile force acts directly in the centroid of the
connection. Use U=0.85 and Ubs=0.80. For fracture failure, use
paths DEHIJ, DEHLM, and DEHBC. For block shear, consider planes
DEQHIBC and GHIBC only. (Final answer should be up to 4
decimal places).
