An existing warehouse will be used for the storage of
six product families. The ware house consists of storage bays of
size 10’ x 10’. Dock 1 has been designated as the receiving dock,
while dock 2 is used as the shipping dock. The area requirement and
monthly load rate for each product family are shown in the
following table. Assume dedicated storage and rectilinear travel
(measured between the centroids).
(1) Write a linear programming formulation to determine
a layout of the warehouse that will minimize the total expected
distance traveled per week.
(2) Determine the layout that will minimize the total
expected travel distance.
