For each of the following questions, report 1) the
appropriate statistical test or estimation procedure to use (a
single test for each question), 2) the null and alternate
hypotheses, 3) the test statistic, 4) the P value, 5) whether you
accept or reject the null, then 6) a sentence or two about what the
results mean.
A student conducted a study on the size of ʻopihi in three
categories (S, M, L) in the intertidal zone in two locations (Hilo
and Kona). The student measured 160 ʻopihi total, and the results
were: Hilo- 5 small, 15 M, and 43 large: Kona- 25 small, 45 medium,
27 large. Is there a difference in the observed vs.
expected counts of size categories between Hilo
and Kona? (assume that the null hypothesis is no
difference, equal proportions). (8)
