Due to the changing COVID situation in the past 2 years, the
students of X Academy have experienced four different curriculum
models in the past four semesters. In the first semester, before
the pandemic began, face-to-face courses were held as scheduled. In
the second semester, when the pandemic reached its peak, the
courses had to be conducted entirely online. In the third semester,
as the pandemic subsided, online and face-to-face courses were
conducted in a mixed mode. Finally, in the fourth semester, an
outbreak on the campus caused the entire school to suspend classes,
and only recorded lecture videos were available. The table below
shows the semester GPAs of five students that were chosen at
random.

(a) Students appear to have fared better in the first semester
based on the average GPA per semester.
The research’s preferred interpretation of this result is that
face-to-face teaching is the best course mode. However, can you
think of TWO alternative interpretations
of the observed data? (NOTE:Do not make more than 2 guesses hoping
to get lucky. I will only mark the first two I see).
(b) For ONE of the alternative
interpretations identified in question (a), suggest a research
design solution that would rule out the alternative
interpretation.
