Name 10 (10 Bonus points) The SS Edmund Fitzgerald, or Big Fritz, was a 13,000 ton ore carrying freighter built in 1957 by the Great Lakes Engineering Works of Ecorse, Michigan. She was captained by Ernest McSorley, an experienced captain, with a full cargo, (26,116 long tons) of taconite iron ore pellets left Superior Wisconsin bound for steel mills on Zug Island south of Detroit. On the Evening of November 10, 1975 she was approaching the Locks at Sault St. Marie. She was running in consort with the Arthur M Anderson. encountered sustained winds of 67 mph and gusts of 86 mph, with rogue waves as high as 35 feet. She reported that two of her hatch covers and some of her railing had been blown away. She was taking on water. Her radar was also gone. She was relying on radar from the Anderson for guidance. A bit after 7 pm, she broke in half and sank in Lake Superior about 15 nautical miles from the entrance to Whitefish Bay, right on the US Canadian border. Both the Whitefish Point light and the navigational beacon were inactive at the time. For seventeen years, she had been the largest ship on the Great Lakes. She took her the entire crew of 29 men to the bottom 530 feet below.
