(15 pts.) X-ray
crystallographic studies show that elemental rhodium (Rh) exists in
a face-centered cubic crystal. The length of
the sides for its crystalline unit cell was found to be 3.8034
Angstroms.
(a) Calculate the mass
density, in grams / cm3, for rhodium. (Hint:
1 Angstrom = 1 x 10-8 cm, 1 amu = 1.661 x
10-24 grams).
(b) Calculate the
diameter of the rhodium atom in Angstroms, based on the above
data.
(c) The (111) planes
in the rhodium crystal are separated by an interlayer distance (d)
of 2.1959 Angstroms. If neutrons that have a wavelength (λ)
of 1.386 Angstroms were diffracted by the crystal, what is the
value of the observed angle (2θ), in degrees?
