SECTION 2 - Thermal Physics 2 [6] One mole of what is believed to be an ideal diatomic gas undergoes an isobaric compression at room temperature. (a) Use the First Law of Thermodynamics to determine whether heat is sup- plied to or removed from the gas during this process, (b) Values of Cy = 20.78 J mol-'K- and Cp = 29.09 J mol-' Kare mea- sured for this gas. Use these data to demonstrate whether the suppositions that the gas is both diatomic and ideal are actually true. (c) Given that dQ=nCpdt during an isobaric process, calculate the change in entropy for this gas assuming it is compressed to one sixth of its original volume. (a) Assuming the compression is carried out reversibly, calculate the change in entropy of the surroundings. [4] [1]
