Final Project ECN304 The Scenario: Congratulations. You have just inherited your imcle's business, which is a clothing store. Although the business was successful, your uncle was a "seat of the pants" type of businessman. There was never any sales analysis conducted concerning, e.g. determining the effectiveness of promotional policies. You litend to analyze past sales data to gain insight into the business operations. On BB, under the folder Term Project, you are going to find PROJDATA.XLSX file. The data in this file corresponds to a random sample of 100 sales transactions that took place over the previous year. Because all transactions took place during the previous year and all transactions took place on Saturdays, on non- holiday weekends, you are confident that seasonal and cyclical effects are absent from the data. The Analysis: Based on this sample, you seek to answer the following questions: 1. Should you consider targeting males or females in your promotional policy? In answering this question, consider the following: a) Is the proportion of male and female shoppers significantly different? (a=.05) b) Is the average sale amount for males different than the average sales amount for females? (a-05) 2. Should you be encouraging or discouraging credit card sales? In answering this question, consider the following: a) Is the proportion of credit and non-credit sales significantly different? (a=.05) b) Is the average sale amount for credit sales different than the average sales amount for non-credit sales? (a=.05) 3. What is the lag effectiveness of the current advertising policy? In answering this question, consider the following: a) Does the average amount of sales differ 0, 1, and 2 weeks after an advertisement? (q=05) b) Test the hypothesis that the average amount of sales o weeks after an advertisement is larger than the average amount of sales 2 weeks after an advertisement. (a-05) 4. Can multiple regression be used to "profile" a sale and determine whether a customer is spending more or less than anticipated, i.e. to predict the amount of a sale given the profile of a sale? a) To answer this question, conduct a regression analysis.
b) How does the regression analysis support (or not support) your answers to part 1-4 above? I What to do? Apply the statistical tools that you have learned in class, to the above question using Microsoft Excel or Minitab as a tool. What to hand in: (Do not include the Data Set) Submit a report with your work for parts 1-4 above. For each part above, you should include: a) A description of the statistical technique(s) used to analyze the question and why the technique is appropriate for the desired analysis. b) A narrative descriptions of how the data was (re)organized so as to make the data amenable to a spreadsheet solution c) The numeric output of the spreadsheet, embedded as a number exhibit in your report d) A narrative analysis of your findings, with reference to numbers appearing in each exhibit. c) A management conclusion specifying a course of action to take based on your findings. In essence, you need to describe what you did and why (parts a and b), what you found (parts c and d) and what you conclude (parte). In order to prepare your report, you can use Excel or Minitab and copy and paste your work to MS Word. You can upload an electronic version of your report on BB.
Grading: Your grade will be based on the following: selection of correct technique, proper application of technique, proper interpretation of output, reasonableness of conclusion reached, organization and labeling of spreadsheet, organization and logical flow of report, effectiveness of report, and the technical accuracy of your report (spelling and grammar).
