1. For each of the following research situations, propose a
sampling plan (Steps 1-3 mentioned in Week 6 lecture slides).
(Hint: Think of the appropriate probability or nonprobability
sampling techniques appropriate for each scenario). Sample sizes
are already provided. Provide a brief explanation for why the
proposed sampling plan is appropriate. a. Deliveroo
(www.deliveroo.com.au), the online food delivery company, wants to
understand the causal impact of a new promotion campaign – adding
“free delivery” to selected restaurants if customers place orders
within the next 5 minutes. The company wishes to know whether this
increases the probability of ordering from these selected
restaurants. Note that these “selected restaurants” are determined
by the company and could vary by time and location. The company
wants to conduct a randomized experiment with 1000 individuals.
Half the respondents are shown the old website design (control
group, with no promotion campaign) while the other half view the
new website design (experimental group). We then observe whether
they click on these restaurants, complete the purchase and the
dollar amount spent (outcomes). Assume that the food delivery
website receives on average 100 customer visits per hour across
Australia between 11 AM and 11 PM. For this part, propose the
following (note, survey method is not necessary since we are
directly measuring behavioural outcomes in this causal setting) –
(7 points) i. Target population (hint: think about which
geographies/cities would be relevant) ii. Sampling frame (list or
set of instructions) iii. Sampling technique iv. Justification for
sample representativeness b. The Alfred hospital receives many
overseas patients who travel to Australia for medical treatment. A
number of these patients don’t speak English and may have trouble
interacting with hospital staff. The hospital would like to
understand the satisfaction of these overseas customers with their
in-patient experience by recruiting 200 previous international
patients to answer a survey. Provide the following – (9 points) i.
Target population ii. Sampling frame (list or set of instructions)
iii. Survey method iv. Sampling technique v. Justification for
sample representativeness 2. You need SPSS for this question. This
exercise makes use of the Sustainability survey and dataset. Please
only submit relevant SPSS output to answer the questions. Suppose
that you have been commissioned by Monash University to draft a
brief research report to understand the effectiveness of Monash’s
communication strategy regarding their environmental sustainability
initiatives. Your marketing research team has drafted a survey
questionnaire called “Monash University Environmental
Sustainability Survey” and collected data from Monash University
staff and students. These are available to you as “the
Sustainability survey” and “the Sustainability data.” on Moodle. a.
Open the Sustainability Data in SPSS using Monash MoVE. Open the
“Variable View” of the dataset. Using this codebook and the
Sustainability Survey pdf, report the variable name and
corresponding measurement scale for questions Q6 and Q47 (2
points). b. Create frequency histograms for these 2 variables.
Depending on the measurement scale for the above variables, report
the appropriate measure of central tendency (provided below) and
their interpretation (6 points) – Mean – for interval/ratio scale
Median – for ordinal scale Mode – for nominal scale c. Next, we
want to test whether the following RQ is true in the population. RQ
– Are respondents on average have a positive concern about climate
change (Q6)? (Hint: Consider “4” as neutral). (4 points) For this
part, • Create the null and alternative hypotheses. • Test the
hypothesis using the data using SPSS with a one-sample t-test. For
this part, include the SPSS output of the relevant test. • Report
your findings. For this part, report the appropriate p-value and
interpret the test results.
