A mechanical system is designed to drive a machine, as shown in the following figure. The design parameters for the spur gears and the motor are summarized below. Gear Diametral pitch P Motor speed Gear pressure angle Ø 20° n Output power of the Motor, H 1 hp 8 teeth/inch 1,700 rpm 1700-rpm motor 16T 32T do -241 To driven machine (a) Draw a free-body diagram of the idler gear (32 teeth) and find all forces that act on the idler gear. (10 points) (b) Draw a free-body diagram of the shaft AB and find all forces that act on the shaft. (10 points) c) The pinion gear (16 teeth) is made of Grade 1 steel, through-hardened at 250 Brinell. The pinion gear has a life of 10' revolutions. The stress cycle factors can be calculated with Yn=1.3558N-0.0178. The reliability for the gear mesh design is 95% (KR=0.868). A unit temperature factor Kt is used for the gear mesh design (K =1). If the bending stress on this pinion gear o = 15,000 psi, estimate the safety factor, SF against the tooth bending of this pinion gear. (10 points)
