The composite shaft ABCD in Figure 2 consists of an aluminium
alloy tube, AD, of length 1 m into which is inserted a steel core,
AC, of length 0.6 m, as shown. The assembly is then fully built-in
at both ends and a torque of 200 Nm is applied at B. The internal
and external diameters of the tube are 30 mm and 50 mm
respectively, and the shear moduli of the aluminium alloy and steel
core are 27 GPa and 80 GPa respectively. Assuming that the two
materials are rigidly bonded to each other, determine
(a). The torque carried by each material in AB and BC and that
carried by the aluminium alloy in CD.
(b). The angle of twist at points B and C.
