1. (a) A cylindrical specimen of a nickel alloy having an elastic modulus of 207 GPa experiences only elastic deformation when a tensile load of 8900 N is applied. Compute the maximum length of the specimen before deformation if the maximum allowable elongation is 0.25 mm. (b) For a brass alloy, the stress at which plastic deformation begins is 345 MPa, and the modulus of elasticity is 103 GPa. (i) For a brass alloy, the stress at which plastic deformation begins is 345 MPa, and the modulus of elasticity is 103 GPa. (ii) If the original specimen length is 76 mm, what is the maximum length to which it can be stretched without causing plastic deformation? (C) A cylindrical specimen of steel having a diameter of 15.2 mm and length of 250 mm is deformed elastically in tension with a force of 48,900 N. The modulus of elasticity, shear modulus and poison ratio of the steel are 207 GPa, 83 GPa and 0.30 respectively. Determine the following: (1) The amount by which this specimen will elongate in the direction of the applied stress.. (ii) The change in diameter of the specimen. Will the diameter increase or decrease?
