The cross-sectional dimensions of a structural steel column, which serves as the central support of a tall loading platf
The cross-sectional dimensions of a structural steel column, which serves as the central support of a tall loading platform, are as shown in Figure 2. The column is rigidly fixed at its foundation and the top end is free. Young's modulus for steel is 210 GNm2 and the yield stress is 320 MNm? 200 lyy 50 50 200 100 Figure 2 (a) (b) (c) The second moment of area Ixx about a horizontal axis through the centroid of the section as depicted in Figure 2 is given as 125 x 106 mm (Note: This value need not be verified). Determine the second moment of area Iyy. (4 Marks) Determine the pertinent radius of gyration, k, for the section to be used in buckling load calculations. Instead, show and explain briefly how this is obtained using Euler Formula as the starting point (4 Marks) (e) Determine the buckling load for the column using Euler formula. Is this a valid calculation of failure load? Explain. (4 Marks) (f) If the platform were to support a load of 120kN, what is the permissible column height? (3 Marks) (9) It is proposed to reduce the flange width of 200 mm to reduce the weight of the column for a more cost-effective design, but without affecting buckling characteristics. Discuss how this may be achieved through design modifications. (4 Marks)
