QUESTION 1 (50) 1.1. The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has appointed you to lead a team of water resources planners to propose preliminarily a dam at the outlet of the quaternary catchment having the lowest MAR in D11 of the Orange drainage system, South Africa. The design is based on hydrological data provided in the Water Resources of 1990 (WR90) reports as follows: -The live storage (15x10 m?) is based on a recurrence interval of 100 year low flow sequence with an allowance of 26% for sediment accumulation. - The region applies strictly to catchments with the widest range of areas. Consider medium category (for sediment accumulation) - Use sedimentation yield bands between 90 and 95%. Determine the following: a. The gross draft (in Mmº/a) to be met b. Sediment rate (t/a) C. Trap efficiency (%) d. Average silting rate (t/a) e. Total dam capacity (Mm) (5x7 = 35) 1.2. You are leading a team of technologists tasked to design a new dam at the outlet of the quaternary catchment D21B of the Orange drainage system. The annual net demand on the new dam is estimated to 50x106 m². Calculate the preliminary storage requirement (in mº) for the dam failing to meet the target draft twice in 100 years. (Upstream afforestation and irrigation demand are assumed negligible). (15)
