A contractor is planning to use a tandem-powered (twin engine) scraper to grade a building site for a small medical clinic located at an elevation of 600 feet. The material to be removed is dry common earth weighing 2,750 pounds per bank cubic yard with a swell estimated to be 20%. The excavated material will be moved over a 2,000-foot haul road for disposal. The haul road has an uphill grade of 5% when traveling from the construction site to the dump area. The rolling resistance of the haul road is estimated to be 60 pounds per ton. The contractor obtained the following information from the manufacturer for the scraper as well as the performance charts to estimate travel time over a section of the haul route. Assuming that the scraper has a single pusher, estimate the hourly production of the scraper. (14 points) Rated heaped capacity: 17 loose cubic yards Maximum load: 48,800 pounds Job efficiency: 45 minutes per hour Operating condition: Average
