1. (15pts) A portion of a concrete masonry unit was tested for abortion and moisture content and produced the following results Mass of unit as received -58658 Saturnted mass of unit-6186 g Oven-dry mass of unit - 5620 g Immersed mass of unit - 2954 Calculate the absorption of the unit in kg/m b. Calculate the moisture content of the unit as a percent of the total absorption c. Does the absorption meet the ASTM C90 requirement on absorption? d Why is it important that the concrete masonry units meet certain absorption requirements 2. (10 pts) A wood specimen with a cross section of 1 in. 1 in and a span of 12 in was tested in bending by applying a load at the middle of the span. If the maximum load is 420 lb, find the modulus of rupture of this wood. 3. (10 pts) Choose standard PG asphalt binder grade for the following condition: (show your calculation) The seven-day maximum pavement temperature has a mean of 45°C and standard deviation of 4°C The minimum pavement temperature has a mean of -26°C and a standard deviation of 2.0°C. a) At reliability of 84% b) At reliability of 98%.
4. (15 pts) An asphalt concrete specimen has the following properties: Asphalt content - 4% by total weight of mix. Bulk specific gravity of the mix = 2.42. Theoretical maximum specific gravity - 2.60 Bulk specific gravity of aggregate - 2.71 Absorption is negligible. Calculate VTM, VMA, and VFA of the above specimen. 5. (5 pts) A glass fiber reinforced composite consist of 70% of glass fiber and 30% of epoxy. The modulus of elasticity of the glass fibers and epoxy are 72 GPa and 7 GPa, respectively. Calculate the modulus of elasticity of the composite in the fiber direction.
