Assignment Getting Started While conducting your research for this assignment, be sure to review or have in mind the required reading material and your class notes on gross domestic product. To complete this assignment, you will need access to the internet and the ability to copy images from websites to your report document. Writing your Report Your report will be organized into four sections corresponding to the four questions below. Questions 1, 2, and 4 should each be at least 200 words in length, and the data in Question 3 should be clearly presented with appropriate citations of sources. A separate introduction section is not required. The report should be double-spaced, clearly written in your own words, free of typos, and spell-checked. Question 1 - Priorities Thinking in terms of communities or entire countries, as opposed to individuals, what outcomes do you believe are the most important indicators of human well-being for the lack thereof) and why? How do your own values affect your views on this? How might others with different values respond differently to this question? Question 2 - Choose an Alternative Index With your response to Question 1 in mind, which of the following alternatives to GDP do you think most closely reflects your own values on the question of measuring well-being and why? How do GDP and the alternative you chose measure human well-being? That is, what is included in (what 'counts toward') GDP, what is included in your alternative measure, and how do they relate to human well-being?
Question 3 - Measuring Well-being in Your Chosen Country Choose a particular country that interests you and report the data for that country for both GDP per capita and your chosen alternative index.
The data you report for this should include the following: • The most recent values for your chosen index and for GDP per capita. Your country's global ranking for your chosen index and for GDP per capita. Note that you may also include information on how these values have changed for your country over time, though this is not required. Question 4 - Comparison Compare the numbers and rankings for your country in Question 3. What conclusions do you draw regarding human well-being in your countries as compared to the rest of the world? How does the way GDP is defined versus your alternative index affect these conclusions? Reflecting on your own views from Question 1, explain which measurement is more effective and why?
