A research chemist has proposed a new method for determining phenylalanine in the whole blood of newborns. A clinical laboratory evaluating the method obtained replicate values of 0.0682, 0.0677, 0.0685, 0.0685, and 0.0679 mg/ml. The same sample analyzed by an accepted standard method produced a mean of 0.0687 and standard deviation of 0.00037 mg/ml based on seven measurements. Can the laboratory director be 90% confident that the new method will give results that are not significantly different from the presently accepted standard method? Can he be 99% confident?
