At depth in a mine, stress components have been measured on two
orthogonal vertical planes trending 030 and 120. the component of
normal stress acting on each plane is +20 bars on the 030 vertical
plane and -20 bars on the 120 vertical plane. a. Make a map view
sketch of the two vertical planes in the mine b. Sketch the Mohr
circle corresponding to the 2-D stress state in the horizontal
plane. c. What is the maximum shear stress? d. What is the
differential stress? e. What are the values of the principal
stresses in the horizontal plane? f. what orientations do the
stresses have (bearing and plunge) g. What is the angle between
sigma 1 and the vertical planes along which there is zero normal
stress? h. What is the orientation of these planes of zero normal
stress? Give strike and dip of each.
