A multi-disciplinary team of health researchers and
social scientists from The University of the West Indies is
interested in studying perceptions of gender-based violence (GBV)
in the Caribbean. Based on a review of the related
literature, the team decides to investigate the possible relation
between exposure to information on GBV and perception of GBV,
and differences in perception of GBV across different
age
groups. The team selects an appropriate theory, and
constructs the following hypotheses: 1) H0: Exposure to information
on GBV is not significantly related with perception of GBV 2) H0:
There is no significant difference in perception of GBV based on
age group.
In designing their data collection instrument, the team
uses the following definitions: 1) Perception of gender-based
violence – the degree to which an individual considers GBV to be
a major social problem in the Caribbean on a scale of 1 to
5
2) Media exposure to information on GBV – the extent to
which an individual perceives themselves as having been
informed about GBV through the media
3) Age group – the age group to which an individual
belongs (young adult, middle-aged, elderly)
The team intends to conduct a regional study of adults
throughout the Caribbean, and formulate recommendations which
can be used to address the issue of gender-based
violence.
Based on the research scenario above, answer the
following questions:
a) What is the dependent variable in the research
scenario above? (2 marks)
b) Identify the independent variables in the research
scenario above. (2 marks)
c) Explain, with reference to the research scenario, the
purpose of conducting a review of the related literature. How
is the literature review connected to other steps in the research
process? (4 marks) d) Explain, with reference to the types of
validity, one strength and one weakness of using the survey
research design in this study. (4 marks)
e) The team must decide between using parametric or
non-parametric tests for their hypotheses. Based on their
assumptions, explain two differences between these types of tests.
(4 marks) f) Using the definitions provided, construct a question
which measures:
i) the dependent variable, providing appropriate
response options (2 marks)
ii) any one of the independent variables,
providing appropriate response options (2 marks)
