ATMO 1100 Extra Credit Goal: Use the ideal gas law, the thermodynamic equation, and the concept of work to explain why a parcel cools as it rises? All problems must be attempted for any credit. Answer on a separate piece of paper. Due: in-person on or before the last day of class. Note: the pressure (P) of a parcel never changes; however, in the environment, pressure decreases with height. The Ideal Gas Law: P = ORT Question 1: (a) Rewrite the work relationship using the ideal gas law? W = Fd (d: displacement) Hint: Which variable from the ideal gas law is related to force? Can you rewrite the above relationship in terms of that variable? (b) How does work physically relate to the parcel using the relationship you just found (i.e., how does work change when the right-hand side of your equation changes)? What causes the right-hand side to change and why? Question 2: When work is undergone by or on the system, how does the temperature change respectively assuming no diabatic process. Use the thermodynamic equation to justify your answer. Thermodynamic Equation: Q=AU + W (Q: heat and AU: temperature gradient; no diabatic processes means Q=0) Question 3: Using your answers from the previous questions, what happens to the parcel temperature when your parcel "expands" (aka volume increases) and vice versa (contraction -> volume decreases)? Question 4: Based on what you just learned, which terms from class does this adiabatic expansion and contraction relate to?
