An idealised engine mount frame, consisting of four pin-jointed truss members 1-2, 1-3, 1-4 and 1-5, is shown in Figure Q4(a). The supports at points 2, 3, 4 and 5 are fixed on the circumference of the vertical firewall of diameter 1 m and point 1 is at a horizontal distance of 1 m perpendicular from the vertical plane of the firewall. The engine mount frame is symmetrical about the vertical y-z plane as shown in Figure Q4(b). An engine load of 300 kN is applied vertically downward at point 1 as shown. All the truss members have the same value of cross-sectional area A and Young's modulus E. Using the finite element method of structural analysis, (1) Construct the overall stiffness matrix of the frame. You may choose to form the overall stiffness matrix symbolically. Then, after reducing the size of the overall of stiffness matrix by applying the boundary conditions, you may substitute the numerical values for the geometric and material parameters to avoid any unnecessary calculations. [17 marks] (2) Construct the load vector F and form the final reduced system of equations [K]{U}={F} in order to determine the displacement(s) at node 1. Please note, it is not required to solve for the nodal displacements. [8 marks] Firewall x 2 1 m 30° R = 0.5 m R = 0.5 m Figure Q4(a) 5 2 300 kN 300 kN Front view Figure Q4(b) 60% 5 X
