Question 3 (25 Marks) A 6.0 m span beam supporting a uniformly distributed load of 6 kN/m and a point load of 60 kN is shown in Figure 3. (a). Show that the vertical reactions at the supports 'A' and 'B' are 20 kN and 76 kN respectively. (20%) (b). Draw to scale, on graph paper, the shear force diagram. (30%) (c). Draw to scale, on graph paper, the bending moment diagram. (30%) (d). Define what is meant by "sagging" and "hogging" bending moments. (10%) (e). For the beam in Figure 3 what are the maximum "sagging" and "hogging" bending moments and where do they occur? (-10%) Note: Shear force and bending moment diagrams should be properly labelled with units (on both axes). Maximum values should be indicated. 60 KN y 6 kN/m A 2.0m B 1.0m Figure 3 3.0m X
