You work for an engineering firm which has been given the task
of overseeing the design and installation
of the mechanical systems (power and HVAC, hot water) for a remote
hotel for “ecotourists” on the
border of the rain forests in northern Guatemala. Your company has
decided to design and build its own
power plant to generate power for the facility. Your current
assignment is to make a recommendation for
design based on minimizing energy consumption. Your specific tasks
are:
a. Calculate the total power requirement based on peak summer
conditions
b. Design a power plant that can provide the needed power (Rankine
Cycle or Gas turbine).
c. Fuel consumption per day at this peak load condition
d. Find the fuel cost for generating 1kW-Hr (for your design)

Hot water for shower/heating can be supplied by electricity, a
separately fueled furnace, or by waste heat from the gas turbine
extracted from the exhaust of the regenerator. The demand for hot
water is 180,000 liters/day.
Performance specifications for equipment being considered for the project are detailed on the following pages. Below are the power, HVAC, and hot water requirements for the hotel building. Here are the specifications on the hotel building. Condition Fall/Winter Spring/Summer 710 kW Electric power demand 620 kW (excluding heating and cooling): Outside temperature: 35 °C 15 °C Outside relative humidity: 85% 55% Vol. flow in and out of building: 3100 m³/hr 3100 m³/hr In accordance with guidelines set by the hotel developer, you must keep the hotel building within the following conditions: between 20 and 25 °C with relative humidity between 40% and 50%. The heat flow into or out of the building can be calculated from the following equation: Total Heat Heat needed to process air flow + Heat conduction through outside walls - Heat from electrical appliances - Heat from people tot Qair.in +5.0(kW/K)* (Tinside - Toutside)-0.45(Building Electric Demand) - 12 kW Qair,in represents the energy needed to get the air flow coming into the building to the necessary temperature and in the case of high humidity, any further energy extraction to get rid of excess humidity. In those cases where the airflow must be cooled below the desired temperature to remove the humidity, some reheat will be needed to bring temperature back to comfort level. The reheat can either be done electrically or with hot water coils.
