Assume that, using our CE3603 Fluid Mechanics knowledge, we designed a water fountain. Water is supplied to the fountain from a large lake (i.e., steady water level in the lake) through a circular pipe (with a 90° elbow) with a uniform diameter of 0.1 m and a pump (see the schematic for details). The length of the horizontal portion of the pipe is 8 m, the length of the vertical portion of the pipe is 0.2 m, and the friction coefficient along the pipe is f= 0.1. We used a pump that has a head of 2m. A circular nozzle with a diameter of 0.06 m is attached to the vertical end of the pipe. The loss coefficients at the elbow and nozzle are 1.0 and 0.7, respectively. [density of water, pwater 1000 kg/m³; kinematic viscosity, Uwater 1.05x10-6 m²/s; gravity acts downward in the schematic; consider atmospheric conditions outside the lake and nozzle]. = = (a) How high would the water from the fountain/nozzle shoot up? (b) What is the total volume of water discharged from the lake in 1 hour? (c) Is the flow in the pipe laminar or turbulent? Show your calculations. Steady water level (4) 8m Large Lake D=0.1m (2) Pipe f=0.1 Pump hmax (3) 8m Dnozzle=0.06m KL,nozzle=0.7 0.2m KL,elbow=1.0
