QUESTION 4 4.1. In the publication by llunga and VP Singh (2015), i.e. Measuring spatial variability of land use associated with hydrological impact in urbanised quaternary catchments using entropy, Water SA Vol. 41 No. 1, pp.41-53 (available at http://www.wrc.org.za), the notion of annual risk of failure associated with flooding of hydraulic structures was used. Calculate the annual risk of failure of most river bridges in Johannesburg, associated with 2 design storms that could be exceeded once on average in 100 and in 150 years respectively. 4.2. Referring to the Red book manual (Guidelines for human settlements planning and design), determine the probability of not exceeding the design flood for each South African major system shown in Tables 6.1 and 6.2. What is your observation?
