Problem 2 (30 points) Assume that the beam shown below is adequately reinforced for flexure. The left side of the beam between A-C is reinforced with No. 3 stirrups at uniform 4 in. spacing, whereas the right side between C-B has No. 3 stirrups at uniform 10 in. spacing. Determine the nominal (i.e., without load factors or capacity reduction factors) load P that would cause failure. In addition to the load P, the beam also carries a uniformly distributed load of 5 kips/ft, which includes the self-weight of the beam. Use the simple equation given in formula sheet to calculate concrete contribution of shear strength. Material strengths are fe = 4,500 psi and fy = 60,000 psi. 24 in. 15k/ft 4 in 20 in. 21 in. 4 ft 10 ft + 8 in 8 in. 8 in. No. 3 stirrups No. 3 stirrups at 4 in. o.c. at 10 in. o.c.
