QUESTION A2 (15 marks) a) Figure QA.2 shows a true cross-section through a sheet-piled excavation in a soil of permeability k = 4 x 106 m/s. The soil is overlain by 4 m of highly permeable gravels, and the natural groundwater level is 2 m below the gravel surface. (i) Draw a flownet for seepage on Figure QA.2, which must be handed in with your answer book. (4 marks) By means of a flownet sketched on a suitably-modified cross-section estimate: (4 marks) (ii) the minimum capacity required of the dewatering system, and (iii) the pore water pressure at the point A. (4 marks) (iv) Comment briefly on the stability of the base of the excavation. (3 marks)
