Anesthesia
Early anesthesia: natural substances such as cocaine and opium
(Morphine).Two terms: anesthesia and analgesia anesthesia: A body
condition where the person lacks feeling or sensation of any kind –
including the sense of pain. Think of the person as being asleep.
Analgesia: a condition without pain. Drugs, ice, and heat,
positioning, etc. Local anesthetic: Numbs a local area of tissue.
Use Lidocaine, Marcaine, Xylocaine, etc. (the “-caines”).William
Morton: A Boston dentist. On Oct. 16, 1846, he acted as the first
modern professional anesthesiologist. Anesthesiologist: One who
studies the lack of feeling. Dr. Morton successfully anesthetized a
patient who was having a tumor removed from his jaw by a surgeon.
Morton had the patient inhale ether through a glass flask placed
over his face. The patient quickly became unconscious. So ether was
the first general anesthesia. The person loses consciousness and
experiences total loss of all types of body sensation.
