The problem shows that a single photon cannot be completely absorbed into a free electron. A resting electron (mass m) is hit by a photon with momentum pf and energy Ef. It is assumed that the photon is absorbed and in the process the electron receives kinetic energy equal to the momentum of the photon and the energy of the photon. Consider a system made up of an electron and a photon. a) Write the energy and momentum expressions of the system in the initial and final states. b) Show that when an electron receives the kinetic energy K, its momentum must be 2mc² p=- 1+ K с K c) Show that the above expression is inconsistent with the magnitude of the momentum emitted by the photon. d) However, in a photoelectric phenomenon, why can the electrons of a piece of metal receive all the energy of a photon? Isn't the law of retention of momentum competent?
