To reduce the risks of giardiasis due to water supplied from the
desalinated water, your firm was requested to propose the design of
a chlorine based disinfection system that will be added to the
water treatment plant. The disinfection treatment will be completed
after turbidity is reduced by the conventional treatment
(coagulation, flocculation, clarification, and filtration), and
water is purified for domestic use through salt and VOCs removal,
and hardness reduction (think about removal credits). The city has
required that the disinfection system contains 3 cross baffling
serpentine PFR rectangular basins organized in a parallel flow
system followed by a combined main distribution pipe. Each PFR
basin will have a height of 4 meter and width of 10 meter. The
distribution pipe will run for approximately 1 kilometer from the
treatment plant to the first customer. The water will be at 0.5°C
and pH of 7.5, and flowing at a peak flow of 12,000 kg/min. The
required residual concentration is 0.6 mg/L. In designing your
process specify the following descriptions that meet the
disinfection requirements (total log inactivation ≥ required
log):
- The most appropriate chlorine concentration
- PFR basin dimension
- Distribution pipe diameter
(please show calculations!)
(This is the whole question my professor provided. I thought it
needed more info too but I wasn't sure what info. This is part
three of my three part project. In the early parts of the project
we determined soda ash and lime feed rates in a rapid mix tank,
finding the diameter for an air stripping tower, and organic
compounds entering the water.)
