Design a screw press, similar to one shown, for a load of 5 tons (6000 lb). The depth of the throat g is to be 10 inches and the height of h is to be 15 inches. Overall factor of safety = 2, infinite life. Specify all materials. a) Find the diameter of screw and designate thread type and pitch such that shear stresses in threads are within factor of safety. Check for frictional forces developed in the threads, assuming they are lubricated. b) Determine diameter of hand-wheel or length of handle, assuming that maximum force exerted by a man is 150 lb c) Design the frame. The shape of the section will depend on material used. Check for stress at the 3 sections shown using curved beam formulas. Check for stress concentration at radius r. d) Design the bushing (inside threads). Check shear stresses in threads. e) Find the location and number of bolts required to fasten frame to base plate. f) Perform FEA on completed assembly in SolidWORKS/ansxs. g) Submit report at or before the due date.
